- What's your actual line speed?Wi-Fi should cover your home and comfortably deliver what your ISP actually provides. Buying a 10-gigabit-class Wi-Fi 7 beast for a 300 Mbps plan is like putting racing tires on a hatchback — pleasant, pointless. Match the radio tier to the plan plus headroom, not to the dream.
- What's your floor plan?One modern dual-band router covers apartments and small single-floor homes with sane walls. Two-storey, brick, longer-than-~15 m throws, metal-backed stud walls: you need two or three units (mesh or access points), not a 'better' one. No router — at any price — beats a floor.
- How many devices, and how chatty?Over ~25 active clients or a serious IoT population, generation matters: Wi-Fi 6's OFDMA and target-wake-time exist for exactly this. Ten light users on a budget Wi-Fi 5 unit will never know the difference.
- What do you own already?Wi-Fi is a system, not a box: the speed of your real links is capped by the clients, which are mostly Wi-Fi 5/6 today. A $600 router talking to $400 worth of old gadgets adds nothing they can use (see Upgrade guide's compatibility notes). Buy one generation ahead of your devices, never two.

Price bands that mean something (2025-26 street prices)
- Budget single router (~$50–90): Wi-Fi 6 AX1500–AX3000, one gigabit WAN, app setup. Covers a 1–2 bedroom apartment and nearly any sub-500 Mbps plan. The best price-per-sane-network in existence.
- Mid (~$100–180): faster CPU, more antennas, 2.5G WAN options, Wi-Fi 6E on 6 GHz, better app and security subscriptions (often free tiers suffice). The sweet spot for a house with many clients.
- Mesh kit / 2-pack (~$150–300): two-or-three nodes, ideally dedicated backhaul band (6 GHz = noticeably better). Choose the ecosystem that matches the plan, and buy 2 nodes for a typical 3-bedroom; you can add a third later — the expansion is the point.
- Wi-Fi 7 (~$250+): genuinely worthwhile only with multi-gig service, early-adopter clients (new flagships now ship BE radios), or as a 10-year box. For everyone else last year's Wi-Fi 6E flagship at half price is the smarter buy — and it always has been.
- Used enterprise / ISP units: great values if you don't mind locked firmware (ISP-branded units may refuse to work with other providers) and no support.
The brands question, honestly
At a given price, Asus, TP-Link (incl. Deco), Netgear, eero (Amazon), Linksys, and Google Nest consistently deliver comparable wireless performance; what differentiates them is software quality, update discipline, app experience, and mesh openness. Priorities that outlive brand loyalty: a vendor still shipping firmware for that model line, an app you don't hate, and no paywall on basic routing. Check the model's age: a 2024 release in 2026 has years of support runway; a 2021 release may not. For business or rental units with multiple floors, eero/TP-Link Deco mesh sets hold their home with least-tinkering users; Asus suits people who want the actual radios exposed in a settings page.
Don't forget the other 20% of the bill
- Ethernet cable where you can run it — cat5e already does 2.5G for nearly all runs; a $15 spool and an afternoon is the best 'Wi-Fi upgrade' money can buy.
- A short patch lead or two in the right cupboard prevents the I-need-it-now cable.
- If the mesh route: you might want an extra node over the feature spec; radio count in one box does less than a second box in the bad room.
- You almost never need a separate modem: DOCSIS-only boxes with built-in Wi-Fi are fine for most cable customers; fiber users usually keep the provider ONT and plug WAN into it.
- Skip: antenna upgrades (modern routers use internal arrays; the screws are fake), signal-boosting stickers, range extenders — the Optimize and Upgrade pages covered better options for all three.
